Next Generation Trawl Sonar is Launched

Simrad's next generation trawl Sonar, the FS70 will debut at Fishing 2006 on the Echomaster marine stand (H40). The new Simrad FS Trawl System utilises the ultimate FS third wire system with Simrad PI sensor integration to provide real-time images, enabling skippers full control of any type of trawl. With trawl sonar images and PI sensor data available on the bridge, the quality of catch can be maximised and efficiency during time at sea can be increased.

"Skippers have requested for decades a trawl sonar concept with integrated wireless backup from catch and depth sensors, and Simrad is now able to deliver such a sophisticated system," says Thor Bærhaugen, Simrad.

The FS70 Trawl Sonar is smaller, lighter and easier to handle than the popular forerunner from Simrad, the FS20/25. A key aspect of the development was designing easy deployment and handling on deck. As a result, the FS70 now benefits from a deployment package that is more rugged and durable than any other trawl sonar on the market. Designed for the harshest environments, the FS70 can withstand the extreme forces encountered when shooting a trawl and the now famous yellow colour makes it easier to see even in the dark.

Integration of the FS70 with PI sensors also provides an excellent backup system. By installing a PI control unit and hydrophone, skippers get a complete back up system for catch indicators and other sensors. This makes it possible to get trawl height, door spread, catch and depth information from the wireless sensors by implementing the receiver from the PI system into the third wire FS system.

The new FS Trawl System with the FS70 at its core combines the best technology of Simrad�s trawl monitoring systems, the PI and FS. It provides accurate information fast and is the perfect, flexible tool for increasing efficiency at sea.

Echomaster Marine recently installed the new Simrad SX93 Low Frequency Omni Directional Sonar on James Duthie Fraserburgh based pelagic trawler, Sunbeam and are pleased to report excellent results. Small schools of mackerel and herring were consistently detected at 2000 metres and during the trip a school of Mackerel 3.5km long and 50m deep was recorded. It was the largest single school anyone onboard had seen recorded on a sonar.

Simrad SX90 Now with Audio Output

Simrad have answered user requests for sound and enhanced noise filtering on the SX90 Sonar. Users need only to connect a pair of powered speakers to the SX90 computer to take full advantage of the new audio functionality.

Macduff Shipyards Ltd are presently constructing a new 27 meter Fishery Research vessel for Fishery Research Services of Aberdeen. The vessel has been designed by Macduff Shipyards Ltd and the project is under the management of Macduff Ship Design Ltd.
